How National Folk Festival turned around a $470K deficit by partnering with Humanitix

The Challenge: A Festival in Crisis

When Anne stepped into the role of Festival Director for the National Folk Festival in 2025, she inherited a daunting challenge. The beloved Australian festival had just posted a devastating $470,000 deficit, forcing the organisation to reduce staffing from 5 to 2 employees.

"My main task was to make the festival financially sustainable again. We had to look at everything – sponsors, suppliers, and income streams – searching for improvements and savings wherever we could find them."

The festival's ticketing system was part of this review. While there had been ongoing discussions about exploring alternatives to their longtime ticketing provider, these conversations had never translated into action. Now, with financial pressure mounting and a skeleton crew, Anne needed a solution that could do more with less.

β€œI was hoping to find a ticketing system that could assist with an improved ticketing experience for our punters, but also a backend system that would make it very easy for us to learn and manage.”

The Solution: More Than Just Ticketing

Anne's search led her to Humanitix, and the appeal was immediate and multifaceted:

Savings for punters

"We knew we couldn't decrease ticket prices, but Humanitix's lower booking fees meant real savings for our customers without reducing our income," Anne notes.

"As a non-profit festival partnering with another non-profit organisation, it was much easier to explain to festival-goers why booking fees exist and where that money goes."

Operational independence

"Having full backend control and being able to make changes as required, without having to contact the ticketing company, was game-changing. But we still had a contact person with insanely fast response times when help was needed."

Advanced features out-of-the-box

The festival needed sophisticated functionality, including complex camping maps, multiple ticketing tiers (Early Bird, First and Second Release etc.), discount codes, and special access codes for artists and volunteers. Humanitix delivered all seamlessly.

The Results: A Complete 180Β°

πŸ“ž Customer enquiries plummeted by >60%

The impact on customer service was immediate and dramatic:

  • Before: Peak times required 5 staff members, often all or most of them simultaneously handling ticketing enquiries
  • After: Just 2 staff members, with both on ticketing calls only a handful of times all season
"We had lots of great feedback from the public – the system was much easier to use and more intuitive, especially the camping maps. We always get a few calls from people without internet access, but enquiries were highly reduced this year."

πŸŽͺ Seamless onsite delivery

Onsite support proved invaluable for a festival run entirely by volunteers:

"Having Humanitix staff onsite was essential. Our ticketing offices are solely run by volunteers, so having someone to troubleshoot, give advice, and make it easier for our volunteers was amazing. We had lots of great feedback about the positive energy and attitude of the Humanitix team."

πŸ“± Volunteer-friendly tech

The Humanitix scanning app and sales system received unanimous praise from volunteer coordinators:

"The setup is much easier to use – very intuitive. Normally when we make changes, we get complaints for the first couple of years, but we haven't had any complaints about changing ticketing platforms, just positive feedback. Having options to scan and look up by name helped our volunteers throughout the weekend."

πŸ›οΈ New revenue streams

An unexpected benefit came from merchandise integration:

"The option to sell merchandise through the ticketing system enabled us to meet our merch budget even before the festival even started. Something we've never done before at this scale, but it really benefited our income stream and guided us on how much merchandise to order."

πŸ“Š Enhanced marketing capabilities

Website traffic surged beyond previous records, and there was a noticeable uptake in views when Humanitix sent out its events newsletter featuring the National Folk Festival (in orange below), even more than the first day of sales (in yellow)!

The data advantage

Beyond operational improvements, Humanitix provided crucial insights for future planning:

"The data collection was highly useful for debriefing and planning for 2026. We could ask for information like gender, age, and how many times attendees had been to the festival. This intelligence is invaluable for a festival organisation. Being able to send out email campaigns by ticket type was also very useful just before the event, as we have so many different camping areas, gates and access needs."

Looking Forward: A Partnership for Growth

As Anne and her team prepare for 2026, the partnership with Humanitix has evolved from a cost-saving measure to a growth enabler:

"We're already looking forward to working with the team again for 2026. It couldn't have been easy for them – working with 100 volunteers in our ticketing offices – but Tash & Karina always maintained a great positive attitude and guided our volunteers through the weekend."

"Having no issues with everything working seamlessly – from building our ticketing system to going on sale with multiple ticketing stages – made all the difference," Anne concludes.

"For a festival that needed to do more with less, Humanitix delivered exactly what we needed and more."

The National Folk Festival is Australia's premier celebration of folk music, bringing together artists and audiences from across the country and around the world. They are celebrating their 60th year in 2026 - tickets are on sale now here.
