Our financial model

We pay our people well. Here's why that's a good thing.

We built Humanitix to prove that a technology company can compete at the highest level and simultaneously dedicate all profits to charity. Part of competing at the highest level means paying our team well. We're proud of that, and we think it's worth explaining how our model works - because it's genuinely different from anything else in our industry.

What Humanitix actually is

Room to Read students holding up books and smiling

Humanitix is a ticketing platform. We sell tickets to events - concerts, conferences, festivals, community gatherings, school fundraisers - just like Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, or any other ticketing company. We charge a booking fee on those tickets for the use of our product and services, just like they do. In most cases, our fees are meaningfully lower than theirs.

Here's where we're different: we're structured as a registered charity, which means we have no shareholders, no venture capitalists expecting a return, and no founders sitting on equity worth hundreds of millions of dollars as the staff of Humanitix have donated this upside to charity. One hundred percent of our profits are dedicated to our charitable mission.

Each year, we make significant grants to carefully selected charity partners working on education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and more. We also innovate and invest in making events more accessible for people with disabilities. Like any responsibly managed organisation, we also maintain reserves so the business can weather unexpected shocks, honour multi-year grant commitments, and invest in growth that will allow us to create even more impact in the future. This is how you run a sustainable organisation - whether structured as a business, charity, or household. You plan ahead so that you're still standing next year, and the year after that, and the year after that.

Humanitix founders Adam Josh giving The Life You Can Save a giant cheque for $4 million AUD

To date, we've donated over $20 million AUD. In 2024 alone, we donated $10 million - more than double the year before. We were ranked #32 on Australia's Top Corporate Givers list, ahead of companies like Qantas (Australia’s largest airline). In the next ten years we think we can become the largest corporate giver across Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom, all from tiny ticketing fees. For transparency, we publish our donation receipts online. These donations keep flowing every year precisely because we manage the organisation for long-term impact, not short-term optics.

Compare us to what we compete with

The word "charity" conjures a particular image: volunteers, donation tins, op shops, community groups running on goodwill and shoestring budgets. That's a world we deeply respect, but it's not what Humanitix is, and it's not the right lens through which to understand us.

Humanitix operates in one of the most competitive software markets in the world. Our competitors are companies like Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, Dice, and a host of well-funded regional players - backed by billions from investors, employing thousands of engineers, salespeople, and marketers, and paying top-of-market salaries to attract the best talent.

That is our competitive landscape. That is what we should be compared to. Our competitors take their profits and distribute them to shareholders. We take ours and fund education for disadvantaged children, cataract surgeries for people with preventable blindness, and food security programs. Our competitors pay their staff well and generate private wealth for owners. We pay our staff well and give everything else to charity.

When you make that comparison, the only surprising thing is that there aren’t more companies operating our way. And part of our mission is to change that. We want to inspire more businesses to adopt this model - not just in ticketing, but across every industry. Imagine if even a fraction of the world's profitable companies redirected their profits to charitable purposes instead of private shareholders. The result would be billions more dollars flowing to the causes that matter most. Humanitix is proof that the model works. Other great examples are companies like Patagonia and Newman’s Own - part of the incredible network of the 100% for Purpose® Club. We hope this is just the beginning of a broader movement for more ethical capitalism.

Why we chose to be a charity

and what the founders gave up.

GiveDirectly - Nepiyala, Malawi

Humanitix was deliberately structured as a charity from the get-go. Not because it was easier - because it was aligned with the founders’ values, and they wanted to build something incredible with their careers that gave back at scale. Structuring Humanitix as a charity also quenched their intellectual thirst to experiment with capitalism in a way that aligned with their aspirations. Registering as a charity means the organisation is asset-locked. It can never be sold for private benefit. It can never be acquired. No one can extract extreme levels of private wealth from it. The founders, Josh and Adam, made this choice knowing full well what they were giving up. If Humanitix had been structured as a for-profit company, it would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars today. The founders would be extraordinarily wealthy, but they chose not to be. Similar is true for many of Humanitix’s earliest employees.

Humanitix team Aug 2019 - Infomedia

In the early years, Josh and Adam self-funded the business. They worked for free for Humanitix for the initial years, with one of them working a non-Humanitix job to cover their living costs. They made significant financial sacrifices and took enormous personal risk with no major financial upside waiting at the end. Along the way, once they'd proven the model could work, some generous philanthropists chipped in to help Humanitix scale. Most startup founders accept low pay in the early years because they hold shares that might one day be worth a fortune. The Humanitix founders accepted the same sacrifice with none of that upside. A lot of the early staff made similar sacrifices.

Why we pay market-rate salaries

Humanitix is a technology company. We build and maintain a sophisticated platform that competes head-to-head with well-resourced, for-profit competitors. We operate in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. We process hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales. We need software engineers, product managers, designers, data analysts, customer support specialists, marketers, and operations staff. These are the same roles you'd find at any serious technology company, because that's what we are.

Our staff are not paid from public donations. They are paid from revenue we earn by competing in a commercial market, exactly the same way staff at Ticketmaster or Eventbrite are paid. The difference is that our people do the same work without the share options, equity grants, or ownership stakes that their counterparts at for-profit companies receive. Many of them could earn more elsewhere. They stay because they believe in what we're building.

To attract and retain the calibre of people required to build a world-class product, we strive to pay market-rate salaries. That's how you build something that actually works. And it's how you ensure the business keeps growing, keeps competing, and keeps generating the profits that fund our charitable mission.

The alternative would be slashing salaries in the name of appearing more "charitable"; this would be self-defeating in the long-run. The best people would leave for competitors who pay properly. Platform quality would decline. Event hosts would switch to other providers. Revenue would fall. And donations to our charity partners would shrink.

Beyond the practical argument, there's a principled one. We believe that expecting people to accept below-market pay because their employer does good in the world is, frankly, a form of labour exploitation. It asks individuals to personally subsidise a charitable mission through their own lost wages. That's not something we're willing to do when it doesn’t have to be that way. Paying people fairly for their work isn't in tension with our mission, it is part of our mission. A social enterprise that underpays its people isn't something to admire. It's just a different kind of unfair.

The whole dream of Humanitix is that you don't have to choose between doing meaningful work and earning a fair living. We're proud that our team earns competitive salaries. They deserve it.

We earn our own revenue.

Product mockup - analytics

This is an important distinction that's easy to miss if you're thinking of Humanitix as a traditional charity.

Humanitix does not ask the public for donations. We don't run fundraising campaigns. We don't send emails asking people to give to us.

We earn our own revenue by running a ticketing platform. We sell a service. We compete in an open capitalist market. We cover our costs, including salaries, from that revenue, and then we dedicate our profits to our charitable mission: funding grants to charity partners, building reserves to ensure the organisation's long-term sustainability, and investing in growth and accessibility so that our impact compounds year after year.

Humanitix team photo at retreat - Summerland Point

Our salaries are a cost of running the business which generates the revenue that creates the profits, which in turn funds the donations. You cannot have the donations without the business, and you cannot have the business without the team.

This is the definition of a sustainable social enterprise. It's the model that everyone in the social impact space has been hoping could work. And it does work. The proof is in the tens of millions in donations that are growing.

On our financial reporting

You may notice that some of our financial details on the ACNC (Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission) register are redacted. Here's why.

The ACNC provides a formal mechanism for charities to request that commercially sensitive information be withheld from the public register. This is a standard, well-established process governed by the ACNC Commissioner's policy, designed to protect charities whereby disclosing their financials could hurt their mission, which is exactly where we play.

Humanitix competes directly with well-funded, for-profit ticketing companies. Publishing granular financial details every year would hand our competitors a detailed view of our cost structures, margins, and investment priorities, information that no for-profit competitor is forced to publish. Being structured as a charity shouldn't mean competing with one hand tied behind our back, and the ACNC recognises this. They review these requests carefully, weighing sensitivity against the public interest.

To be clear: we still report our full financials to the ACNC. Our accounts are audited. The regulator has complete visibility. The information is withheld from the public register to protect our competitive position, but not hidden from oversight. There's a significant difference.

What we're building

and what we hope others will too.

Music festival at sunset - unsplash

Humanitix exists to prove something: that a business can be world-class, treat its people well, and direct its success toward making the world better. Not one of those things at the expense of the others - all of them together.

Every ticket sold through our platform generates revenue that pays for a talented team to build a better and more accessible product, which attracts more event hosts, which sells more tickets, which creates more profit, which funds more donations to the charities tackling some of humanity's hardest problems. It's a virtuous cycle, and it's working.

Feature Highlight Image

But we don't want to be the only ones doing this. The bigger vision is a world where the Humanitix model becomes normal, where talented people across every industry can earn a good living while knowing that the profits their work generates are going to charitable purposes, rather than making a handful of shareholders extraordinarily rich. If that idea spread to even a small number of industries, the impact on global charitable funding, human suffering, environmental conservation amongst other universal goods would be profound.

We're a ticketing platform that dedicates 100% of its profits to charitable purposes. We pay our team fairly. We compete and win in a tough market. And every year, the impact grows.

That's the story. We're proud of it. And we hope it inspires others to write their own.

FAQs about Humanitix

Like all ticketing platforms, we charge a booking fee on the paid tickets we sell. Unlike other ticketing platforms, 100% of the profits we make fund charitable projects. Once our costs are covered and we ensure Humanitix is sustainable, every dollar of leftover profit from our booking fees goes to impact - to partner charity projects and our own in-house charitable initiatives like our accessibility work for people with vision impairments.

As a registered charity, we don’t have any shareholders or venture capitalists waiting for a return on their investment. That means the money that would normally line shareholders’ pockets or make founders wealthy goes straight towards our mission of investing in humanity.

For a full breakdown of how our donation model works, including donation receipts and details on our charity partners, visit our Impact FAQs.

We do. A portion of our giving supports communities in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States - the markets where we are incorporated with offices. We will add to this as we continue to expand globally. Our Staff Giving program in particular channels hundreds of thousands of dollars to local causes chosen by our team.

In addition to our local impact, we direct a significant portion of our evidence-based giving to some of the poorest parts of the world - places like Sub-Saharan Africa - because each dollar goes dramatically further there. In wealthy countries, the challenges people face are real, but often complex and systemic. In the world’s poorest communities, the needs are far more basic: a child might die from a preventable disease for want of a treatment that costs a mere few dollars, or miss out on an education because their family can’t afford miniscule school fees. When we follow the evidence on where each dollar saves or improves the most lives, it consistently points to these communities.

That doesn’t mean local giving isn’t important - it is, and we do it. But we believe we have a responsibility to maximise the impact of every dollar, and sometimes that means reaching the communities where the need is most urgent and the cost of intervention is the lowest.

No. Humanitix is strictly apolitical and non-religious. We don’t fund lobbying, we don’t take political positions, and we don’t align ourselves with any government, ideology, movement, or political cause. This principle applies to our charitable giving, our Staff Giving program, and our platform policies equally. We focus exclusively on what unites our diverse team and the vast majority of our event hosts: alleviating poverty and giving children a fair shot at life.

Absolutely not. There are hundreds of thousands of events hosted on Humanitix globally, spanning the full spectrum of political, cultural, and religious perspectives. An event appearing on our platform should never be read as an endorsement of its speakers, hosts, or content - just as a library stocking a book doesn’t mean the library endorses that author’s views. Our role is to provide ticketing infrastructure and to turn booking fees into charitable impact. It is not our role to decide who can speak at what event. That responsibility belongs to the legal system, and where content is unlawful, we remove it.

Humanitix is a registered charity regulated by the ACNC (Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission), and we comply fully with all reporting requirements. However, there is a subset of charities that operate in competitive commercial environments of which Humanitix is one, and we exercise our right under the ACNC’s guidelines to withhold certain commercially sensitive financial information from the public register.

The reason is straightforward: while we are a charity, we compete directly with for-profit ticketing companies. If our detailed line-by-line financial statements were publicly available, our commercial competitors would gain an unfair advantage - they would be able to see our cost structures, margins, and operational details in granular detail, while we have no equivalent visibility into theirs. This would be potentially very damaging to our operations and create a fundamentally uneven playing field.

The ACNC explicitly recognises this concern and provides guidance for charities in our position. You can read the Commissioner’s Interpretation Statement on withholding commercially sensitive information on the ACNC website. We are fully transparent with our regulator and we publish our donation receipts for the public to provide evidence of the incredible amounts Humanitix is now donating to charity every year at no extra cost to anyone.

We choose our charity partners in collaboration with The Life You Can Save. This ensures that our giving is directed towards evidence-based interventions that create measurable, positive impact. We focus particularly on closing the education gap and alleviating poverty, with partners operating across Australia, the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and developing regions globally.
